As the warmth of the sun rises from its winter hibernation, the thick winter coat, warm boots, and cozy scarves begin to see less days. As we peel away our heavy layers, we search our closets for that perfect spring outfit. Through our shuffle for that perfect outfit, to take on our busy day, we begin to feel everything looks ” so last year”.
As we approach a new season in a new year, even with our Wardrobe we can feel like we need a new start. Think about it, for most of us who are on a journey of growth, to wear something we wore a year ago can feel like we are living in the past. That was that dress you wore when your boyfriend broke up with you, or when you got fired from your job, when you were depressed, or how about when you decided you were going to grow up and actually become the person you know you want to be.
There is a part of you that feels like that dress is not you anymore. Or those pair of sandals represent a time when you were so dirt poor and they were all you could afford. You may have an innate feeling that that dress, or whatever, is not your style anymore.
You may fell like 2017 is your year to be a more powerful, success, happier and more stylish you. You have chosen to put the past in the past, but your wardrobe is a representation of a person you no longer are. You may look at pictures from last year this time and think, ” what was I wearing?”, or, I want to feel or look more XYZ…
Here is my challenge to you. Put last years Wardrobe in the past. Of course for those great stable pieces like jeans, that great pant or skirt suit, or even that simple sexy black dress that no matter the year, it’s in style. For those great stable pieces, unless they harbor some awful memories, their out of style, or super dated, keep them. They still have life in them and you can make a lot of new outfits with them.
Although Im not one to say wear this or that because they are “trending,” I will say that knowing what is in style can be a great starting point to building your new wardrobe. Not only will you be introducing yourself to styles you may have never worn, but you can customize your jumping on the “trending” bandwagon by learning what style fit who you are.
Here is what is in for Spring/Summer 2017
Tip: When you come across a style that resonates with you, make it your own. You don’t have to wear what you see as they are show. They are displayed on models who are wearing the style as the designer would style them. These are to inspire you rock them in your own way.
Head to Toe Florals:
Not only are floras beautiful to the eyes, florals can make you feel really feminine and you’ll carry an effortless poise that will make you feel oh so lady like. The one thing I love about the floral trend is that it’s not really a trend. Wearing florals with a classic styled dress, skirt, top or pants will always be in style.
Styling Tip: Florals are a statement piece in and of their own. Don’t do too much accessorizing when wearing head toe. If you wear a floral pair of pants or skirt with a simpler top then it’s ok to play up the accessories on top.
Stripes are another classic trend that remains in style when worn with classic pieces. Go for this eye catching statement piece that looks put together and stylish. Stripes have a very “nautical” and” meet me in the Hamptons” flare that will have you feeling put together and summer chic.
Styling Tip: For the slimmer body type you can wear any type of stripes: thin, wide, horizontal or vertical, they are all your friend.
For the fuller curvy figured girl, be careful cause the wrong stripe can be unflattering and even make you look heavier or shorter than you desire. Opt for vertical stripes that are not too thin, this will elongate, slim, and complement your curves
Mixing it up with the Mix and Match
Nothing says “fashionista” better than a girl who know how to mix and match prints and textures. This style is for that creative girl who wants to truly express her artistic appeal. Although, when one sees this walking piece of art and desire to be so brave, there is a finesse to pulling this off without looking like a got mess. With that said, for you beginners who what to experiential with mixing prints, I recommend staring your journey using strips and flowers as base prints to catch with. They both go with most other prints.
Styling Tip: When mixing and matching, especially for beginners, replace your solid colored top with a monochromatic pattern in the same color. Polka Dot, Leopard, and Stripes are great neutral prints to match with Choose one dominant print, have that print be bigger in size than the other. When mixing the same print, have one print bigger in size and other smaller, or both the same size but different colors. Do your best to keep the colors complementary, you will know it when you see it, when two colors clash. Try to mix and match an accessory for the same effect for example a flannel red and black shirt with a leopard clutch purse.
